Et avec de nombreux appareils scientifiques hors service, il ne faut pas trop compter sur nos reliques spatiales pour \u00e9tudier plus en profondeur l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de notre syst\u00e8me solaire. Ce qu\u2019il nous faut, c\u2019est une sonde moderne qui puisse aller tr\u00e8s vite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour ce faire, le laboratoire de physique appliqu\u00e9 de l\u2019universit\u00e9 John&nbsp;Hopkins dans le Maryland (USA) explore pour l\u2019agence am\u00e9ricaine un type de propulsion d\u00e9j\u00e0 th\u00e9oris\u00e9, mais jamais r\u00e9alis\u00e9&nbsp;: la fus\u00e9e solaire thermique. Et a m\u00eame bien avanc\u00e9 sur le sujet, puisque la premi\u00e8re exp\u00e9rience pratique de mise en place de la propulsion fut concluante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le principe&nbsp;technique ? Point de super moteur fa\u00e7on films de science-fiction, mais un bouclier thermique spatial noir de jais parcouru par un r\u00e9seau de petites tuy\u00e8res \u00ab&nbsp;vascularis\u00e9es&nbsp;\u00bb avec de l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne. Sous l\u2019effet de la chaleur du rayonnement solaire, cet hydrog\u00e8ne se dilate et subit une explosion contr\u00f4l\u00e9e en bout de tuy\u00e8re avant d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e9ject\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si le principe est d\u00e9sormais valid\u00e9 en laboratoire, cela ne veut pas dire que le projet verra le jour, car les d\u00e9fis d\u2019une telle structure dans l\u2019espace sont immenses. Pour accumuler plus grande vitesse et la plus grande quantit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9nergie possible, le plan est de r\u00e9aliser une man\u0153uvre d\u2019Orbeth, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire faire passer la sonde tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s du soleil pour acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer au maximum d\u2019une part, et profiter de l\u2019intensit\u00e9 du rayonnement pour \u00ab&nbsp;allumer les gaz&nbsp;\u00bb d\u2019autre part. Le plan pour cette sonde interstellaire serait de s\u2019approcher \u00e0 seulement un million de kilom\u00e8tres du soleil, ce qui implique des contraintes thermiques \u00e9normes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais le jeu en vaut la chandelle&nbsp;: la sonde solaire Parker de la Nasa qui devrait r\u00e9aliser une man\u0153uvre similaire \u00e0 \u00ab&nbsp;seulement&nbsp;\u00bb 4 millions de kilom\u00e8tres de notre astre avec un syst\u00e8me de propulsion chimique devrait atteindre la vitesse de 700.000 km\/h. Or, plus la man\u0153uvre d\u2019Orbeth est r\u00e9alis\u00e9e proche de la masse cible, plus la vitesse est grande.
