En ce mois de novembre, Intel f\u00eate les 50 ans de son premier microprocesseur, le 4004. Con\u00e7ue pour la calculatrice Busicom 141-PF, cette puce permettra le d\u00e9veloppement de l’informatique grand public.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En novembre 1971, voil\u00e0 tout juste 50 ans, Intel d\u00e9marrait une r\u00e9volution technologique en lan\u00e7ant le tout premier microprocesseur grand public. Aujourd’hui les microprocesseurs sont omnipr\u00e9sents, dans les smartphones, les voitures, et m\u00eame les appareils auditifs et v\u00eatements connect\u00e9s. Lors de son lancement, le 4004 n’\u00e9tait pas tant remarquable par sa puissance. Les ordinateurs de l’\u00e9poque \u00e9taient bien plus rapides. Ce qui \u00e9tait r\u00e9volutionnaire, c’\u00e9tait d’int\u00e9grer toutes ses fonctions sur une seule puce minuscule, de la taille d’un ongle humain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La conception du 4004 a commenc\u00e9 en 1969, quand l’entreprise japonaise Nippon Calculating Machine Corp a demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Intel de lui fabriquer des circuits int\u00e9gr\u00e9s pour un prototype de calculatrice. Le Busicom 141-PF devait au d\u00e9part int\u00e9grer 12 puces, mais trois employ\u00e9s d’Intel, Marcian Hoff, Stan Mazor et Federico Faggin, ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 r\u00e9duire ce chiffre \u00e0 quatre, dont le 4004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le 4004 \u00e9tait \u00e9quivalent \u00e0 un ordinateur de 167\u202fm\u00b2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0Le 4004 \u00e9tait tellement r\u00e9volutionnaire qu’il a fallu environ cinq ans \u00e0 Intel pour apprendre aux ing\u00e9nieurs comment construire de nouveaux produits autour des microprocesseurs\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb, a indiqu\u00e9 Stan Mazor. Ce premier microprocesseur 4 bits fonctionnait \u00e0 une fr\u00e9quence de 750 kilohertz, et \u00e9tait capable d’ex\u00e9cuter 92.600 op\u00e9rations par seconde. C’est une puissance similaire \u00e0 celle de l’ENIAC, le premier ordinateur moderne qui occupait une surface totale de 167\u202fm\u00b2 et pesait 30 tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intel sortira l’ann\u00e9e suivante le 8008, une version 8 bits, puis son successeur le 8080. Ces deux puces permettront la construction des premiers micro-ordinateurs et le lancement de l’\u00e8re informatique grand public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
